A Trip to Edibles

Artworks recently went on a trip to Edibles which is a market garden and community resource situated in Slaithwaite in the Colne Valley. During our away day we spent some unhurried time together as a staff team and were able to get to know some of our new trustees.

Edibles apply a no dig, agroecological and permaculture approaches, which help in maintaining the quality of the ground and soil. We explored how as a creative organisation we could adopt and apply the three permaculture ethics which are: Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares.

There were helpful conversations and discussions on future plans and an abundance of delicious food (the best roast potatoes we have ever had!).

One of the most valuable lessons we learnt during the day, was about how the best produce comes from the quality of the soil. As an organisation we have decided to introduce periods of ‘Fallow’ which is an agricultural term for when farming land is ploughed and left unsown to improve the production potential of crops.

From now on we will be factoring in Fallow weeks into our yearly schedule to allow for recuperation, team building, training and to focus on those organising tasks that often get left to the bottom of the to do list.

Our first Fallow week will be taking place from 10th - 16th April 2023.

A special thanks to Edibles for a great day, we would highly recommend!
