Meet Our Student Curators

We’ve had a lot of fun working on our current exhibition, Nature’s Endurance, with two students from the University of York: Rachael Chadwick and Ellie Yang. Read on to find out more about them…

Hello!

We are Ellie and Rachael, 2nd year Curating and Art History students at the University of York. We’ve been on a placement at Artworks for the past few months and have helped to curate an exhibition, Nature’s Endurance, as part of this.

About the Art We Love

Rachael: I have pretty broad interests when it comes to art movements and styles across history, from illuminations in 13th century manuscripts to the abstract works by artists like Kandinsky and Malevich. If art has bright colours or a strong visual message then I’m pretty much bound to find it enjoyable, no matter what movement it’s attributed to. I enjoy art that challenges me which is why I’m studying curating, because it definitely makes every artwork into a challenge to figure out.

Ellie: I am really into creative, romantic, and vivid artworks in every form, such as Bernard Faucon’s staged photography and Sakamoto Ryuichi’s audio-visual installation artworks. In my perspective, art is a way to express, and curating is a tool to help artworks be alive. I have a great passion for admiring artworks in galleries, and I like to think about how I would curate exhibitions when I’m visiting different places. Different curatorial approaches can make the work feel different to the audiences, which is why I chose to study Curating and Art History at university and want to explore the fascination of curating in the future.

About Nature’s Endurance

Nature’s Endurance is an exhibition that aims to highlight the resilience of nature despite the effect humanity has had upon it and we wanted to exhibit works which reflect these ideas.

We’ll be running some activities on Earth Day, including a celebration event for the exhibition from 2-4pm, so hopefully we will see you then!
