Join us for DIY Utopia in August
What is DIY Utopia?
DIY Utopia is a project looking at how imagination and creativity can be part of making changes happen. Everything in the world today started from people thinking and working together, and Artworks is excited at the chance to work with young people and the DIY Utopia team to explore how you could get involved in our series of FREE workshops!
Who’s it for?
Over the last few months, the DIY Utopia team have been working with Halifax Academy doing a range of workshops, working with young people to reimagine Calderdale. Could this be developing what already exists, or coming up with entirely new ideas? This project uses art as a way of thinking ambitiously about our future, with a focus more on process and ideas than more technical skills.
When is it?
This is a great opportunity for young people to get together over August, share their ideas and work with the DIY Utopia team to come up with an exhibition in October here at Artworks.
There are 4 sessions planned at Artworks over summer:
11- 3pm Friday 11th August
11- 3pm Friday 18th August
11- 3pm Saturday 19th August
11- 3pm Friday 25th August
We’re looking to recruit people aged between 10-14 who are interested in creativity, willing to share their ideas and gain experience in how they can use their own imagination to make a world they want to live in.
Why?
This project comes from a project last year called DIY Utopia that ran in Todmorden, ran by Artworks and funded via #IWill, where the team met whilst working together. Following on from a Virtual Reality project that is running in Lancashire with In-Situ, Mike and Andy are interested in how a career in the arts doesn’t necessarily need to be about being good at technical skills, but rather being able to think creatively and share your ideas with others.
From activism to inventions, being able to make your imagination into reality is a great skill to have. Yorkshire has given the world writers, actors, scientists and a prime minister - so come along to DIY Utopia and see what you’d like your future to look like!
