Artivism

Art and activism have been used together throughout history to make positive change, but the publication of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill 2021 has brought issues around the right to protest to the forefront of debate.

In the last year, the spotlight has been placed firmly on protest, with the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement following the murder of George Floyd and the police’s handling of the vigil held in memory of Sarah Everard who was murdered whilst walking home.

In light of recent events and to mark 40 years since women first arrived at Greenham Common, we have a range of activities exploring the role of art in activism.

What’s on?

  • Our Greenham exhibition - currently showing in our gallery is 'Our Greenham' - an exhibition featuring objects and artefacts made at and for the Greenham Common peace camp’s protest activities. Come and take a look at objects of activism from one of the longest and most famous examples of feminist protest - available to view by appointment or between 10 and 2pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Find out more.

  • ·Badge of protest drop-in workshop - join us on Thursday 28th and Saturday 30th of October, 11am - 3pm and make your own protest badges. Brought to you by artist Layla Khoo and Bradford’s Peace Museum, this workshop is suitable for adults and children aged 5 and above.  Find out more.

For young people:

  • Mindful Mosaic - Join us on Monday 25th October, 1.30 - 3pm for Mindful Mosaics. •  Art-Full Protest - Join us on Friday 29th October, 1.30-3pm for a workshop that will bring you on a journey through the history of creative protest.
