Abstract Identity - Open Afternoon

  • The Everybody Gallery Shaw Lane Halifax, England, HX3 9ET United Kingdom (map)

Free and open to all - Drop in to experience artist Rawan Hasan’s work

This event is part of a series of micro residencies in The Everybody Gallery, with a range of artists working with us over the coming months. Check out this page for more information.

About the Project

Rawan’s collection of abstract portraits seeks to capture the essence of a person beyond their physical features: conveying personality, emotions, and spirit through abstract forms, colours, shapes, and textures.

Using a range of mediums such as acrylic, ink, print and collage, Rawan will represent specific emotions or moods associated with the subject. Her artworks capture the subject's dynamism and vitality through gestural brushstrokes, printing or dynamic compositions.

Rawan will be experimenting with different abstract styles and techniques to find the best representation of each subject she explores. By approaching portraiture in an abstract way,  Rawan will create a range of artworks that are both visually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

About the Artist

Rawan Hasan is a Syrian artist and filmmaker based in Elland, West Yorkshire. Rawan creates figurative abstract painting to explore traumatic experiences, life events, and the inner struggles of humans. Her artworks are inspired by the stories she has heard from people and her own personal experiences. In her work she aims to express both the joys of creativity and psychological struggle caused by the darker side of life.

Rawan held a solo exhibition entitled ‘Post Trauma’ at arthereistanbul in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2022. She has worked as an art teacher for both children and adults in Turkey, and she produced two short, animated films based on true stories of Syrian refugees. Rawan holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Damascus, Syria, and has a certificate in artist training from UDK Berlin Career College.
