Moquette Community Arts project
As part of Calderdale’s Art and About trail, we’re delivering an exciting community arts project to celebrate Calderdale’s rich textiles history.
About the moquette project
The moquette project will bring together communities from across Calderdale to design a new moquette fabric that will be displayed at Halifax bus station.
This will be a key point of interest on the Art and About trail – a route featuring existing landmarks and new art installations that celebrate the unique heritage and culture of Halifax. The project is funded by the Future High Street Fund delivered in partnership by Everybody Arts and Calderdale Council.
Get involved in the moquette project
Join a workshop
Led by our Director and artist, Harriet Fletcher, the project will be delivered in collaboration with artists and communities across Calderdale – and we want as many people as possible to be involved.
We’re running a series of workshops throughout April and May for people to share their ideas and learn more about the design process. Anyone with a connection to or interest in Calderdale is invited to come along and get involved.
Share your stories
Textiles are in our DNA in Calderdale and we’re sure so many people out there will have a story to tell. Head over to our project page or get in touch to share your stories related to textiles or travel in Calderdale.
As many of these stories as possible will be brought together into a documentary film to share the human moments behind the fabric.

Everybody Arts Director, Harriet Fletcher said:
“Textiles are such an important piece of our history in Calderdale so it’s an honour to be delivering a project that means so much to so many.
As our name suggests, we believe art should be for everybody and we work collaboratively with our communities to engage them in creative practices. We want the moquette fabric to be designed by, for and to truly reflect the people of Calderdale - which is why we’re inviting anyone with a connection to the borough, no matter what their age, background or ability to get involved.
The workshops are a great opportunity to share your ideas and learn more about the design process. We look forward to welcoming you.”
Calderdale Council’s Director of Regeneration and Strategy, Shelagh O’Neill, said:
“We’re delighted to be working with Everybody Arts on the creation of the Art and About Trail. The trail is an exciting part of the Future High Streets work taking place in Halifax town centre, celebrating the town’s unique heritage and culture and creating opportunities for people to explore the town by walking, wheeling and cycling.
The moquette project will be a key point of interest within the trail and we want local people to be involved in its creation, either by attending a workshop or sharing their memories via the Everybody Arts website.
We want to capture the history of textiles production in Calderdale and also what makes the borough special now, ensuring local stories are woven into the final moquette design.
This is an exciting time for arts and culture in Halifax with the trail and wider improvements in the town also supporting celebrations for the Year of Culture, taking place this year.”
