About the Artist - Matt Cameron
Primarily a 'thrower' Matt Cameron, our ceramics tutor and technician, is passionate about functional pottery - accessible art you can use in the everyday. With influences in Celtic pottery and focusing on earthy shapes, textures and colours, Matt strives for elegant and simple forms that feel as good to use as they do to behold.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Matt now lives and works in the Calder Valley. With a basis in Fine Art following his graduation from Bretton Hall/Leeds University in 2006, Matt’s studio practice has evolved over the years from drawing, painting and photography to the world of ceramics and the 3D form.
Psst, If you’re interested in picking up some of Matt’s pottery for yourself he will have a market stall at the Piece Hall on the 18 - 20 November from 10:00 - 18:00, and also at the Valley Gardens in Harrogate on the 3 - 4 December. Make sure to head down and take a look!

Ceramics at Artworks
Matt’s been the driving force behind our recent (and very exciting) Ceramics developments. Alongside the brilliant courses and workshops delivered week-on-week, Matt’s ideas and enthusiasm have helped us to start our journey towards a dedicated ceramics space for all. Following a generous donations from The Kathleen Mary Denham Legacy Fund and plenty of support from our wonderful ceramics community, this October we were able to take our first big step and move Ceramics into a dedicated workshop space. There’s still some way to go to make the space the all singing all dancing Ceramics Studio we’ve envisaged but we’re on our way!

Upcoming Courses and Workshops
Matt is running his five-week course, suitable to all levels of student, exploring the various techniques and methods of ceramics. With afternoon and evening slots available, starting in the new year the course is designed to introduce participants to different styles and techniques with the opportunity to apply these to their own projects freely in whatever form they desire, be it sculptural or functional.
Not Only that, after much demand, Matt will be starting a brand new ‘Wheel Throwing Course’!
For more independent potters, a ceramics studio access membership is available providing access to the ceramics studio and one-to-one technical support sessions with Matt if required.
Matt will also be offering a Festive Family Ceramics where participants of all ages can build their own festive character ornament from clay to take home, glazed and fired, in time for Christmas.
