Frequently Asked Questions

Who are your courses / workshops for?

Our courses and workshops are suitable for complete beginners and those with more experience alike. All levels and abilities will be encouraged to develop their skills in a safe and welcoming environment. You don’t need to have done any art before, we believe that anyone should be able to learn artistic techniques and practices.

What are the class sizes?

Class sizes for all our six week courses are between six and twelve. Class sizes for our one off workshops are between four and twelve depending on the discipline. For example, some of our printmaking courses are kept to smaller group numbers as this requires more one to one tuition.

What time should I arrive?

If this is your first time attending a six week course we recommend arriving around 20 minutes early to meet your tutor and discuss any requirements you may have. Otherwise, you are welcome to arrive around five to ten minutes before your class is about to start to ensure that you can get your materials set up.

Do I need to bring anything?

All you need to bring is yourself! All materials for all our workshops and courses are provided. There are also tea and coffee making facilities available where you can get yourself a drink and a biscuit. We do however ask for a 30p donation to help cover the cost.

What should I wear?

As some of our classes can get quite messy we do recommend that you wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Also, we are based in an old mill and it does sometimes get cold so we recommend that you bring an extra layer just in case!

How do I find you?

If coming from Halifax town centre, go past the B&M store on your left and up Shaw Hill towards the Shay Football Stadium. Opposite the entrance to the Shay, you will see a tower block on your left. Turn left here onto Simmonds Lane. Keep following the road round and you will see the entrance to our car park up to the right, just after the bridge over the railway line. Keep following the road and you will see the entrance to the 1830 Gallery on your left and slightly further on, the main entrance to the Artworks. The main entrance to the building is at the far end, next to a small car park for approximately 4 cars.

Please find more transport information here.

Where can I park?

You are welcome to park in the small car park next to our main entrance, but please be aware that at pick up and drop off times this may get very busy. Wherever possible, we ask that you prioritise these spaces for those with mobility issues. There is a larger car park just off Shaw Lane, at the top of the hill with more spaces.

Please be aware that other parking around Shaw Lodge Mills is very limited and parking fines will be issued where warning notices are posted.

What Covid-19 measures are in place?

You can access Artworks’ covid policy here. Wearing a mask within our building is a personal choice, but we ask that you bear in mind that there may be other vulnerable people in the building. If you have any questions or specific requirements regarding attending a course please feel free to get in touch with us by emailing info@theartworks.org.uk

Is the building accessible?

Our teaching spaces and gallery space are both fully wheelchair accessible. If you have any specific requirements in terms of equipment or if you would like to reserve a disabled parking space please let us know at info@theartworks.org.uk. Unfortunately our studio spaces are not wheelchair accessible at this time.

Refund policy

Bookings are non-refundable, unless the course is cancelled by Artworks, in which case you will receive a full refund. The course will only go ahead if the minimum participant requirement for the course to run is met. If the course does not go ahead, bookings will be refunded.
